3rd Annual March Madness Reading Challenge

What is a "March Madness Reading Challenge?" Mrs. Casieri is challenging every student in the school to read at least 30 minutes per day for the month of March (beginning March 1, which is tomorrow).

We will be kicking off this year's challenge with a "come as your favorite book character" parade on Monday, March 3. If weather prevents us from having the parade on Monday, we will have it on the first full day of school in March. We are encouraging students (and teachers) to dress as a character from their favorite book (all costumes must be school appropriate).

This year, the March Madness Reading Challenge is going paperless!
  • Students should record the minutes they read in their planners each day.
  • Every Thursday, students should add up the minutes they read all week and get a parent/guardian to initial their total (this is also in the planner).
  • Every Friday morning, each homeroom teacher will send an electronic form to Mrs. Casieri with the total number of minutes read by their class that week.
For complete details, please visit Mrs. Casieri's teacher page.

LIS is Honored at Annual NJAHPERD Conference

The LIS Physical Education staff was recognized at the NJAHPERD convention with an award for directing LIS's students in raising $15,009 for the American Heart Association.  This was the top amount for NJ schools running combined events. As guests of NJAHPERD yesterday Mr. Boggs, Mr. Chichilitti, and Ms. Hart were able to have reserved front row seats for the keynote address and attend the day's Health and P.E. workshops.  They are excited to bring some of the new activities and ideas they learned at the convention to LIS's students this year.

In the picture from left to right is NJAHPERD's Executive Director Jackie Malaska, Dave Boggs, Keynote speaker Sheilie Pfohl (Executive Director of President Obama's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition), Jonathan Chichilitti, Victoria Hart, and the President of NJAHPERD JoAnn Doherty.

Souper Bowl of Caring 2014

The Souper Bowl of Caring is a national charity effort encouraging communities to collect non-perishable food for local shelters and food banks in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl. Our sixth grade community service leadership club, Hootie's Helpers, coordinated the Lawrence Intermediate School participation in this worthwhile cause.

Ms. Potocny (advisor) and one of Hootie's Helpers sorting the LIS donations
This year, thanks to the generosity of our LIS families, we were able to donate 239 food items and 223 lbs. of food to HomeFront. Thanks to Hootie's Helpers for organizing this community service effort, and thank you to everyone who donated.

Important Revisions to School Calendar!

As of February 5, we have missed five days of school.  The district's plan to make up these days and potential additional days is as follows:

  • Three emergency closing days were built into our 2013-2014 school calendar: May 23, June 6 & June 13. School will be in session on these dates and students should attend.
  • February 14 was designated as a Professional Development Day for staff and schools were to be closed for students.  School will be in session on February 14 and students should attend.
  • April 14 was scheduled to be the first day of Spring Break.  School will be in session on April 14, and students should attend.
  • If additional make-up days are needed, we will continue taking them from Spring Break in this order: April 15, 16, & 17.
Please call the Main Office if you have any questions about these changes to the calendar. Thank you.
