LIS Cares!

Students and staff are always wondering what they can do for others. Right now, there are several charitable events going on at LIS:

Souper Bowl of Caring
On Sunday, February 5th, 140 million Americans will tune into the Super Bowl football game. There will be food and fun for many people watching the game. At the same time, there will be Lawrence  families struggling to feed their kids for the day.
This year, our school will join groups across America to do our part! Please bring non-perishable food items to school before February 3. The collection will be donated directly to the  Lawrence Community Center to help our neighbors in need.
Did you know? To date, LIS families have donated over 1000 cans of food! That's Souper!!

Book Drive
Ms. Steiner’s 4th grade class is having a book drive to benefit HomeFront.  They will collect gently used and new books for children ages 3-12 to donate to HomeFront for Valentine’s Day, where they will be used in waiting rooms and at HomeFront’s main location for people to take for their children.  Student representatives began collecting books during lunch periods on January 12-13.  A collection box will be in the main office through February 10.

Collection for SAVE
Next week, Student Council will be collecting spare change at lunches for SAVE. SAVE is an independent non-profit animal shelter dedicated to protecting the health and welfare of homeless companion animals in the Princeton area. A paw print with the student's name on it will be displayed in the hallway outside the library for each student who donates 50 cents (or more) towards this great cause.

Happy New Year!

We hope that everyone enjoyed spending time with family and friends during the winter break. Our students and teachers are refreshed, renewed, and ready for all the upcoming activities at LIS. Come and enjoy our students making beautiful music at the Winter Choral Concerts. 5th and 6th grade will be performing at 7:00 pm on 1/12/12 and 4th grade will be performing at 7:00 pm on 1/18/12. Remember, you can check the online school calendar any time.

Two of our LIS 5th graders, Cole and Ryan, recently spent three hours cleaning up a park in their neighborhood. You can tell from this photo that they really enjoyed the experience and were proud to take the initiative to do something good for their community.

Monday, January 16, is when we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. The MLK Day of Service is part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. You can check out local service projects or visit the official MLKDay.gov website to register a service project of your own.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" How will you answer his question?
